i did not do this
this is not my life
i sleep alone though my husband snores quietly next to me

we are watching a baby's story on the television. "wuss" i cry out as the mother-to-be receives her epidural. "i am allowed to say that now," i whisper into her head, a wave of drug free birth superiority washing over me. i point out to her all the things that were like her birth and all the things that were unlike her birth and tell her again the story of how she was found not under a cabbage leaf or in a stork's nest or on the shelf at target but instead inside her mama, where she had been planted by her daddy. she squirms in my arms, planting her feet and straightening her legs in an attempt to shoot herself into the great wide open, just like she did seven months ago.
